Sacrifice has always been regarded as the most convincing proof of loyalty; and its most common form involves a forgoing of the use of some organic function, as in the case of celibacy or fasting. Of at least equal significance, however, is a sacrifice of the use of reason - credo quia impossible - and the more incredible the assertion, the stronger the proof of the devotion manifested by its acceptance.1

We’ve done the work, as the Internet likes to blithely sum up tricky journeys to rock bottom. So when our pain surfaces, it can be quite shocking and disturbing to our sense of equilibrium, and for some of us it can take us a good long while to get back on track, once we're off track. Which is why we avoid going there. We avoid disturbing our own peace by glossing over old hurts that once kept us up at night.
